As soon as I heard on the radio that Susan G. Komen Foundation was yanking its funding to Planned Parenthood because it was under investigation, something didn’t sound quite right. Why would an organization that asks us to “imagine a world without breast cancer” stop supporting another organization that provides breast cancer screening, often to women who couldn’t otherwise afford it? What investigation? Is there any nonprofit organization that has been more thoroughly examined (you should pardon the expression) than Planned Parenthood? Since I was driving, I was in no position to look it up, but I could hear a faint quacking in my head.
As soon as I got to my computer, I could see the chatter on Facebook, Google+ and just about every blog and news feed I subscribe to. Women were outraged, understandably so. Turns out there may be some political reasons for Komen’s decision to yank funding from Planned Parenthood. Quack, quack. Rachel Maddow sums it up nicely here.
The fact that Planned Parenthood provides abortions – not with taxpayer money – is not a revelation. They provide many health and education services, including the birth control that would obviate the need for abortion for many, many women. If you would like to see those services continue, there’s something you can do: make a donation to Planned Parenthood, and send a copy of the receipt to Susan G. Komen. (See information below.) Petitions are great, but money is better. Let Komen know that their logic just isn’t holding up. Make some noise. Quack.Email:
